Nikon sort of introduces 1080p, maybe to high-end DSLR’s later in the year

Brought out last week, the Nikon Coolpix P100 is the first Nikon camera to have 1080p – DSLR filmmakers have been waiting for Nikon to bring something out to rival Canon’s EOS line, and this isn’t it. But it may be a hint of things to come. And maybe Nikon will one-up Canon by having some audio features the EOS cameras don’t.

At the top end of the 2010 Coolpix Performance Series is this 10.3-megapixel megazoom, with a wide angle (27-678mm equivalent) 26x optical zoom lens. Like the Fujifilm FinePix HS10 30x megazoom announced the same day, the P100 uses a backside illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor to enable high-speed continuous shooting and better low-light performance. As with the HS10 (which is $100 more), the P100 records 1080p HD movies with stereo sound and offers HDMI connectivity. The camera will be available in March for $399.95.
And, in an interview with the Swedish Magazine Kamera & Bild, Nikon Sweden’s Johan Kling says it’s “likely” 1080p will be in the next round of Nikon DSLR releases.
